Notice of Crime: Burglary, Core Campus, MPC

In compliance with the “Timely Warning” provisions of the federal Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act, Virginia Commonwealth University is providing notice of a recently reported crime that may pose a serious or continuing threat to campus safety. This notice is intended to aid in the prevention of similar crimes and to enable members of the university community to protect themselves. VCU is dedicated to promoting a safe and secure environment for learning, living, working or visiting.

Reported offense: Breaking and Entering (Burglary)

Location: 715 W Marshall St (Broad & Belvidere Parking Deck)

Date and time of incident: October 2, 2026 at approximately 3:15 a.m.

Brief description of how the crime took place: On October 2, 2026 at approximately 2:08 p.m. (delayed discovery), while investigating another incident at the same location, VCU Police received a report of a burglary event as well. A maintenance shed on the deck was unlawfully entered (unsecured) and various power tools and metal materials were stolen. A separate locked container within was also forcibly opened with a screwdriver that was left on-scene.

Suspect/s: The suspect is a Black male and at the time of the incident he was wearing a medical mask, light grey sweatpants, a black shirt, black Nike shoes with a shiny black stripe, a white “bucket” hat, and a white watch and band. The suspect also had a black lanyard with keys hanging from his right side.

Investigating agency: VCU Police are leading the investigation and have increased patrols in the area.

VCU Police would like to remind the VCU and VCU Health community to keep personal safety in mind, be prepared and take responsibility for your own safety and for the safety of others. A few key reminders:

Burglary / Breaking & Entering:

Follow entry protocols for residence halls and work spaces.
Do not let people tailgate you into the building. Unauthorized persons should be reported immediately to VCU Police or local law enforcement.
Refrain from letting everyone know what you keep in your residence, as this could draw unnecessary attention and targeting by others.
Keep shades or curtains drawn after dark.
When you leave make sure all doors and windows are locked. Always lock the suite entry door, as well as your bedroom/office door.
Don’t hide keys on the exterior of your residence or share access codes to keyless entry doors.
Don’t post your whereabouts on social media. This lets people know that you’re not home.
Notify VCU Police immediately if you suspect you have been the victim of a burglary and immediately report suspicious activity to police.

If you have safety concerns, or see areas that need to be repaired or updated, discuss them with your landlord or housing staff.

Immediately report window and door repairs.
Immediately report nonworking locks.
Request trees and shrubs near windows and doors be trimmed so intruders cannot hide.
